Howard Rheingold

Veteran technology writer Howard Rheingold (Smart Mobs; The Virtual Community) will outline five social media literacies identified in his latest work: attention; participation; collaboration; critical consumption (or ‘crap detection’) and network awareness; and their impact on organizations.

Working in groups to we’ll identify issues relevant to business, government and education and collect practical questions on how to apply social media and Smart Mob thinking in our respective enterprises. Howard will respond with comments from the participants. sLab Chief Scientist Bob Logan will introduce & moderate.

About the presenter:

Howard Rheingold is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the social implications of technology. Co-creator and former founding executive editor of HotWired, he is the author of several books including Tools for Thought, The Virtual Community, and the influential Smartmobs: The Next Social Revolution, which explores the potential for technology to augment collective intelligence. Together with the Institute for the Future (IFTF) where he is a research fellow, Rheingold has launched an effort to develop a broad-based literacy of cooperation. He is a lecturer at UC Berkeley, and at Stanford University, where he teaches courses in Digital Journalism and Virtual Communities and Social Media.
