How can organizations become sustainable in economic, social, & environmental dimensions, & contribute to an emerging strongly sustainable economy? Through its ongoing partnership with sLab, the multidisciplinary Strongly Sustainable Business Model Group (SSBMG) has evolved into a research hub with a planetary mission: Flourishing Enterprise Institute.
Flourishing Enterprise Institute represents a worldwide collective development to effect organizational, policy, and industry-wide change toward the telos of flourishing. The Institute is home to:
- An action research group using systemic design methodologies, creating new knowledge by and for practitioners
- A knowledge-mobilization community, working to share new ideas at scale
- A community of ecological macroeconomists, committed to strong sustainability.
Flourishing Enterprise Institute was founded in 2018 with the generous support of a Connection Grant from Canada's Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). It was built upon the SSBMG (founded 2012) to provide a focal point for collaborative applied research in enterprise-level innovation for sustainability-as-flourishing.
We work with organizations at the 'middle and bottom of the pyramid', in Start Up, SMB, and SME categories. We develop frameworks, methods, tools, practices and techniques that can tie into organizations’ decision-making, and lead toward wholistic, strong sustainability:
- Flourishing (John Ehrenfeld; Positive Psychology)
- Strongly Sustainable (ecological macroeconomics)
- Thriving, Future Fit, Resilient, Regenerative, Integral, Strategically Sustainable (Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development)
- Doughnut Economics (Kate Raworth)
- Sustainable Prosperity (Peter Victor; Tim Jackson).
Our research agenda is structured to prioritize the following:
- Use human-centred research to understand how organizational leaders make decisions
- Illuminate the role of business models in enterprise decision-making, to develop and validate our Ontology for Strongly Sustainable Business Models
- Develop advanced methods for social and environmental impact measurement, to foster more sustainable organizational decision-making
- Identify and map the processes related to business strategy decisions in these organizations
- Design, develop, and test a tool kit, working with organizations to guide improvements and create case studies
- Apply learnings to define new guidelines for incubation and acceleration activities.
We are working on major action research projects,
& welcome interested researchers & practitioners!
