As Director of sLab, Greg is responsible for fostering and shaping the centre's objectives, research program, mobilization and impacts. Greg is also co-convener of sLab's Media Futures and Foresight Methods research groups.

Greg Van Alstyne (@gregvan) is a designer, educator, researcher & futurist in Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada). Co-creating in culture, communication, complex systems, strategic foresight, media ecology, regenerative design, strong sustainability & flourishing, since the 1980s. Greg's research interests include the relationship between design and emergence in innovation ecosystems; futures of digital media; speculative design; critical data literacy; and visualization. Among his research & innovation initiatives, Greg was co-founder of DesignJam.ca (OCE-ONE); and co-investigator for Digital Governance; the Urban Futures panel for Imagining Canada's Future (SSHRC); Economic Futures for Ontario 2032 (OPS); and 2020 Media Futures (OMDC). Prior to his OCAD appointments, Greg held senior media, design and education positions including founder, Department of New Media at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and inaugural director of the alternative design school, Institute without Boundaries (IwB).

Teaching

In OCAD University's SFI program I have co-taught Innovation Research Methods (with Suzanne Stein), Foresight Studio (with Stuart Candy, Madelaine Ashby, and Zan Chandler), and Business and Design Thinking, in parallel with Helen Kerr, Kate Sellen and Michele Mastroeni. My undergraduate courses include Think Tank (design and social responsibility); typeface design; narrative and time-based media; graphic design core studio, interaction design and experience design.
